Storybook Adventure (3rd-5th grade)This residency engages students in a multi-disciplined approach to storytelling, lyric writing and creative writing. Storyteller Amy Woolf tells a folktale reflecting a character trait chosen by the teachers. The students use this story to study creative writing skills and character/setting/problem/resolution and learn how to retell the story in their own words. Songwriter Aaron Fowler then introduces students to lyric writing, helping them create a song based on the original story. Amy then returns to the class to help students begin to write their own stories, which they finish with their teachers. The residency culminates with an all-school assembly where the story is retold and the students share their new song. Creative teaching teams have added various other elements to this terrific residency, including turning the students' stories into books, complete with illustrations and a hand-made puppet.
