Marionettes: Design Engineering

Each participant will create a marionette of a creature real or imaginary, using cotton fabric on a basic newspaper armature. While designing their creature, the participants determine where strings are placed to create joints and limbs. When the basic forms are completed, a cross brace is added. The participants then tie the strings to the cross brace to mimic movement.

The successes and failures of attempting to articulate movement will challenge the participants to be creative in their choices, especially in how to move limbs effectively. Participants will find that there is a relationship between string length and proper movement, but also that the purpose of a joint is to facilitate mobility. Allowing students to design from scratch improves problem solving skills, encourages teamwork, and helps them understand that the terms "design" and "engineering" are not necessarily separate.
