Storyville: A lesson in American history through the study of jazz

Much of our music today began with African American roots in the 1700s. This program is an introduction to the history of African American music from spirituals to the hip-hop music of today. The artist will demonstrate how the roots of the slave songs of the 1700s influenced the music of the 21st century. Students will hear samples of a work song, spiritual, blues & gospel song by artist. Students will sing, play and move to the songs using body percussion, instruments and voice. Students will collaborate with team members to create lyrics for a Blues or work song and design a movement piece to complement their song. Students will perform their original piece with fellow students.
